Perplexity Pro vs Max: pay only when research limits are real.
Perplexity is different because its free tier is genuinely useful. Many people can stay free. Paid Perplexity makes sense when cited research is a daily workflow, not an occasional curiosity.
Start with the free tier
Use the free tier until it visibly fails you. If you only need quick cited answers, shopping research, simple school background or source discovery, free may cover the job.
When Pro is worth it
Pro is worth it when you need deeper searches, more advanced model choices, file analysis or higher daily research volume. It is especially useful for students, analysts, journalists and buyers who need sources attached to claims.
When Max is worth it
Max is for people who treat Perplexity as a workbench, not a search box. If your job depends on repeated deep research, agentic browsing or heavy file/source work, Max can be rational. If not, it is expensive comfort.
